I find myself enjoying a nice quiet relaxing evening at home and what do I decide would complement the mood? …. Death Metal! Maybe the fact that I’m full of caffeine has something to do with that. Either way, I’m enjoying Montreal metal outfit Derelict.
Even before hearing a single note of their music, the band caught my attention by branding themselves “Montreal Technical Death Metal”. That turned my head like a punch in the face. I had never even thought of stringing those words together let alone heard anything by that description before. To say I was curious is an understatement. For those of you who haven’t heard it, Derelict released their last album titled “Unspoken Words” in 2009 and has since toured Canada with well-known Metal groups like “Whitechapel” and “The Last Felony”. Now while I try to fill my music library with as much variety as possible, I don’t often find myself listening to Death Metal. However, this band was recommended by a good source (thanks Matty). I think the fact that a fan of softer music such as me can appreciate this album shows that Unspoken Words isn’t just for the Metal faithful. I was surprised to hear just how melodic Derelict really is. Allot of which is displayed on tracks like “Expiry” and “Pirates” where the guitars provide classical overtones on technical harmonies. On top of being a solid guitarist, Max Lussier demonstrates real creativity on these recordings. Jordan Perry’s drums are a spectacle of technicality while Eric Burnet’s vocals definitely complete the sound. My personal favorite from the album is “Polarized”, as it seems to best blend the different aspects of the band by often transitioning between parts only achievable by an insanely tight group of musicians like Derelict.
While I definitely recommend Metal fans check out the band I wouldn’t be surprised if you softer rockers find yourselves enjoying them as well. You can get a copy of “Unspoken Words” and keep track of future gigs at derelictmetal.com
